An interesting way to make compost is to use a wormery - known as 'vermicomposting'.  It can be fun for kids and its added benefits are that it is suitable for indoor use and can deal with cooked food waste.  Wormeries can be bought ready made or you can make your own.  Here are a few examples of suppliers (no recommendation implied).

The key thing to remember with a wormery is they are living creatures - so you need to look after them.  Be careful with what you feed them.  Follow the instructions carefully and they will turn your leftovers into "black gold". The compost produced using worms is extremely high quality and another benefit is they will produce a lot of liquid – make sure you have some kind of tap or way to catch the run off.  You can bottle it and use it in solution as a fertiliser.
